There are two bookshelves in my room: one for "regular" books (pictured here with my paltry photography skills), and one for comics and manga. Both are running out of room fast. I need help -- but not as much help as independent bookstores! (Still... help...)
Visiting little independent bookstores gives me life... or gave me life, before quarantine. Yes, there are few things I miss more then browsing the aisles, smelling that bookish smell, sifting through blurbs and covers galore. Clicking the purchase button on Amazon just isn't the same.
Recently, however, I discovered something of a compromise: Bookshop.org, which is, to use their wording, "an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores." It's truly wonderful; the admins really understand the importance of the communities surrounding these stores, and are doing everything they can to help maintain and grow patron bases.
I wanted to do my part, too, so I became an affiliate and curated a few lists on the site -- which I will continue to do as other groupings of books come to mind. So, yes, "I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase" (to use the site's wording again). As much I'd appreciate that, I'd appreciate you checking out Bookshop ten times more and doing what you can to support indie bookstores during -- and even after -- quarantine. Click the link below or above (they're the same) if you're interested.
